Dr. Gary Tearston, MD, FACS
Dr. Gary Tearston has been a leading plastic surgeon in the Beverly Hills area for over thirty years. After graduating from Stanford University "With Great Distinction" (Suma Cum Laude), and graduating medical school with honors from University of Pennsylvania, he performed his internship and full general surgery residency at USC-County General Medical Center, and then completed a Plastic Surgery Residency at University of Illinois Chicago, where he accumulated broad experience and training in facial reconstructive surgery through the renown Craniolfacial Center at University of Illinois Medical Center. The exposure to complicated facial reconstructive surgery has been an asset throughout his practice in solving many thousands of structural facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgical problems. He also has had an especially extensive experience in correction of facial aging including thousands of facelift procedures, accompanied by eyelid, eyebrow, and forehead, and nasal procedures, and use of other modalities such as fillers, fat grafting, and resurfacing with laser, dermabrasion, and peeling.
His practice has included extensive experience in body contouring procedures such as breast augmentation and reduction and uplifts, abdominoplasties, thigh and buttock and arm lifts. He has had an early and continuous experience in lipo-sculpture to correct contour deformities including difficult areas such as the knees, calves. and lower legs.
Dr. Tearston has been active as an attending staff member at Cedar Sinai Medical Center, where he has been past Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery. Early in his practice and continuing on through today he has had a special interest and emphasis in breast cancer reconstruction. He is an active participant at Cedar Sinai Breast Center.
He is board certified in both general and plastic surgery, although his practice has been focused on plastic surgery. He has been a continuous member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, as well as the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, California Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a current Officer of the Los Angeles Plastic Surgery Society. He is also a member of the Society of Graduate Surgeons of the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California, Fellow American College of Surgeons, and the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honors societies.
Dr. Tearston believes in focusing on the art and craft of Plastic Surgery. He believes that successful plastic surgery depends equally upon the aesthetic artistic vision in order to know the desired end result, and the experience and execution of craft in order to arrive there. His hobbies since an early age have been in crafts and art. He has continued crafts in woodwork and metalwork. Over the years he has personally made several of the operating instruments that he uses in surgery. This enduring commitment to arts and crafts has allowed him to approach patients problems with an open mind and the ability, when necessary, to "think out-of-the-box" in solving these problems.
He is absolutely committed to the field of medicine with a responsible, privileged dedication to the welfare of his patients. At his graduation from University of Pennsylvania Medical School he received the Morris Ginsburg prize, which is a prize presented from the faculty to that graduating student "who best demonstrates the dedication and other qualities of the ideal physician".
The fact that plastic surgery has a more direct appeal to the psyche and emotional fragility of patients sometimes causes patients to act impulsively. Patients are bombarded with commercial information, much of it being irresponsible and self-serving. Dr. Tearston is dedicated to the principle that a plastic surgeon is first and foremost a physician, and that, as a physician, his role is to not take advantage of impulsive or misguided patient desires, but to guide the patient, if technically possible and appropriate, in achieving their desired goals.
His patient clientele has been local, national, and international. He has operated on many celebrities over the years; however, all his patients are celebrities to him and all are treated with the same concern for their welfare and respect for privacy.
